Dead’ newborn found alive

Kantipur Report

POKHARA, Aug 26 - A newborn infant that was declared dead by staff at the Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara has been found alive.

Health workers declared the baby dead immediately after its birth at 1 a.m. Monday.

When the family took the infant to the local cremation ground for last rites, it was found to be alive.

The infant was then brought back and admitted to the same hospital. His condition is said to be normal.

"They wrapped the baby up in cloths and gave it to me, saying it was already dead while still in the womb," said Manju Thapa, the mother, who is from Shekham VDC-4 of Syangja district. "We shrouded the baby in plastic and kept it under the bedstead throughout the night," she added. After daybreak, the family took the child to local Ramghat cremation grounds, and when Lal Bahadur, Manju's maternal uncle, was about to bury the child in a ditch, it suddenly began to cry.

Conceding that it was a mistake by hospital staff to declare the child dead, superintendent at the hospital, Dr Kalu Sharma, said he would conduct an investigation.
