Pakhribas research center is in Dhankuta not in Dharan. Dhankuta bazaar is about 50 KM north from Dharan. The place where Pakhribas center is further north from Dhankuta bazaar. It may be about 5-6 KM from Hile bazaar which is 12 KM north from Dhankuta bazaar. There was no public transportation from Hile to Pakhribas few years back. I don't know what's is the situation these days in terms of accessibility, security, and research opportunities. Before, it was excellent place to work and live temporarily.

Pakhribas Agricultural Center was established in early 1970's as a training center for Britis Gurkhas on agricultural production. Basically, it was a center for extension of technology. Over the years, it evolved as one of the finest agricultural research center in the hills of Nepal. However, after more than 20 years of direct support, British government's ODA handed it over to Nepal Agricultural Researh Council (NARC). I don't know if it is still a swarga "Center of Excellence" or has been converted to one of the Narka. From a couple of friends still working there, I hear that it is half way between swarga and narka, not bad.

In terms of climate - keep a jacket handy for all the year, may be an umbrella too. Water is full of amoeba, people are nice. Why do you need a bus ride to Hile? It takes only 40 minutes to climb to Hile. It is complete lack of exercise by the standard at PAC. On your return, if you are a bit drunk with Tonga at Gajoor or Himali, just slide down from the top to PAC; you will be there under 20 minutes.

Summary: It's worth being there.
