I have heard that there will be a real scarcity of water in the future. So can the water from seas and oceans be purified and converted to drinking water? There are also many countries which are facing droughts due to inadequate rain water. Wouldn't purifying sea water be a good option?

Yes it is. Process called Reverse Osmosis can purify salty sea water. Though it is expensive at this time.

Reverse osmosis is a good choice for sea water purification but distillation has been used in Tribal region of Northwest as well..
